Mark Nelson is a technically savvy director of photography, director and camera operator who has been a co-owner of San Diego video production company Visual Concepts since 1998. His leadership, technical expertise and creative vision have made Visual Concepts one of the most trusted video production companies in San Diego.

Experience Counts
Visual Concepts’ video production customers have included Fortune 100 customers, Hollywood directors, nationally syndicated television programs, major cable networks, production companies from around the world and international advertising agencies. Prior to that, Mark owned Media Pie Productions shooting and editing medical video, surgical video and live events for major medical clients and broadcast TV production including video documentaries and syndicated TV programming. He also served as Director of Photography and editor for 5 different Body By Jake fitness training videos including the Ab Scissor, Cardio Cruiser, Smart Crunch, Hip and Thigh Sculptor, and Strength Training for Women. He has received Aurora Awards for the Cardio Cruiser and the Ab Scissor Training videos. Visual Concepts has also received an Aurora Award for editing for the Dye Precision :30 spot.

Before owning his own video production companies, he was a media specialist for Scripps Clinic in San Diego, CA.

Mark acts as director of photography and shoots dozens of corporate video interviews each month and has become an expert in quality interview lighting. Mark has put together custom camera packages, lighting, and audio packages that are tailored to electronic news gathering production (ENG) including HMI lighting, KinoFlo lighting and full audio packages. He is equally experienced in studio production settings and often serves as video director for multi-camera shoots. Visual Concepts also coordinates San Diego video crews who have experience working together and providing customers with excellent service.

With a father who was an engineer, Mark's video production know how and quickly resolve technical problems on site is a wanted item. Other production companies often call Mark for his advice on technical issues along with customers.

A Focus on Video Production Craftsmanship
Mark adds a high-end craftsmanship to the programs he directs and produces. Mark’s experience in medical video and sports video and corporate video/live event video runs deep. He has shot and directed live surgical teleconferences, hundreds of medical and corporate interviews, device demonstration videos for bio-tech companies, and multiple live sports events each year in the US and Canada. He linked up with ESPN in San Diego in 1998 and has worked over a dozen XGames as a live hand-held camera operator, director of photography and editor. He has also shot behind the scenes video for companies including Walt Disney Pictures and Television and Red Fish Productions and at San Diego’s Comicon Convention for over 6 years.

Audio Visual Event Production
Mark also possesses extensive experience in audio visual production. This has led Visual Concepts to provide audio visual services in addition to video production services. Mark understands the key elements involved in planning a corporate audio visual event or other live event including arranging for San Diego av crews, sophisticated projection systems, complete lighting design, staging design (including pipe and drape), for audio visual events in San Diego and Southern California. He has worked on numerous corporate AV shows including events for National University, Scripps Clinic, 24 Hour Fitness and HD Supply.

Post-production Expertise
Mark is an experienced editor who started working with Final Cut Pro version 1.0.  His knowledge of the editing process has proved invaluable to his skill as a shooter and to his ability to manage and direct projects Visual Concepts edits. Plenty of HD Production
He has been shooting HD cameras for San Diego County, Orange County, Los Angeles County and Southern California video production needs since 2005 and he purchased his Panasonic HPX 500 HD camera, which shoots P2, in January of 2008. Mark was an early adopter of P2 technology and owns two P2 cameras including the HVX200 camera.

Leslie Nelson
Creative Director/Partner

Leslie brings creative art direction skill and entrepreneurial strength to Visual Concepts. At the age of 23, she returned to her native San Diego after working at Bunting Stock Thomas Partners, an ad agency in London, England, she started her own marketing company Writing & VIsual Concepts (a name that would later evolve into Visual Concepts) , She started Writing Concepts doing marketing consulting, marketing copywriting, editing/proofreading and graphic design. She read dozens of books on copywriting and design and honed her craft through promoting both large corporations and small businesses and educational institutions. She focused on increasing response rates and boosting marketing results by writing and designing convincing ads, brochures, direct mail and later video scripts. Her involvement as president of the San Diego Chapter of the American Marketing Assn, and in the San DIego Regional Chamber of Commerce helped her gain considerable knowledge in a range of marketing and small business matters. As a consultant for the Small Business Development Center for over 15 years, she consulted with over a hundred small business owners on how to promote their companies.

After working with and then getting married to Mark, the pair put their two businesses together. Leslie broadened her writing skills and learned all she could about video scriptwriting and video graphics. She has written numerous broadcast and corporate video scripts for the broadcast and corporate clients and produced programming for television and corporate clients including Fit TV and Lightspan.

Leslie currently manages post-production at Visual Concepts and consults with clients on video production and marketing projects. She enjoys using the power of words and images to build compelling brand identities and meet client goals.

She has loves spending time with kids in the garden and has worked with hundreds of children in the Dailard School garden teaching them about gardening, ecology, botany, healthy food, and a love for nature.

David Teixeira
Video Editor

David brings a wide range of editing styles to the table along with his enthusiasm for production. He enjoys creating motion graphics and telling a visually compelling story through post-production.

He grew up learning about photography from his father, who is a professional photographer. As a result, he has an excellent eye for photography, lighting and composition. He spent many years working as a part of his father's photography business.

For Visual Concepts, Dave has edited trade show videos, commercial spots, promotional videos, television roll-ins, corporate videos and interviews to name a few. He is an experienced at editing in both HD and SD and handles DVD authoring and web compression.

Dave has produced a wide range of video projects and worked with such companies as AT&T, Comcast, Sacramento River Cats, 100% Educational Videos and many more. He worked for the local NBC affiliate in Santa Cruz, California as a news photographer and editor and also held a position with a local advertising agency as a New Media Producer.

He now edits for Visual Concepts on freelance editing projects.

Maria Lopez
Office Manager

Maria grew up in San Diego, contributing to her parents print binding business. She brings substantial organizational and financial management strength to Visual Concepts along with excellent service skills. We like her positive attitude and how she can always thinks of smarter ways to do things. She has some college experience under her belt at Point Loma Nazarene College where she studied nursing. She has a lot of experience working with husband wife teams and family businesses. She has two girls.

On the side: In her younger years she was a competitive bowler. She spends a lot of time with her large family.
